What would be a good motherboard for ATI Crossfire or Nvidia 2W SLI for under $300AUD?
I'm looking to make a gaming beast for $1500 or less, and I wanna venture into the mysterious world of SLI/XF.
It is prefered that the cards run as 16/8 16/8 for optimal performance and that the board be LGA1156 but LGA1366 is fine too.
I would not recommend doing SLI/Crossfire on a budget of $1500. For the reason you have to buy a Motherboard that can support SLI/Crossfire and a power full power supply. Honestly unless your playing on resolutions over 1080p or running Eyefinity/nVidia surround. You should not go with SLI/Crossfire.
Don't bother going for a board that does x16 and x8.
Because if you get, let say 2 ATI 5870 they will both run at x8. Not x16 and x8.
So they will give you the same performance or a little bit more as 1 card because your running them at x8.
With a build budget at $1500 I would recommend a AMD CPU. For the fact they are cheaper and really preform well. They are also optimized to work better with ATI cards via AMD Fusion.
Just get a phenom II x4 CPU and a ASUS Crosshair Formula motherboard.
Also go with 1 card for now. I recommend the 5870. If you want to go cheaper and only lose a bit of performance go with the 6870.
Like I said just go with 1 card for now. You could run Crossfire later. Since the motherboard is x16/x16.
I will still answer your question if your not going to do anything that I mentioned above.
For the best to cards that can do SLI/Crossfire under $300 not including taxes I would go with
2 5770s. It will come up to the same price as 1 6870. It will preform a little bit better to.
But if the cards are running at x8 and x8 you wont get better Performance. You need a motherboard that can do x16/x16.
And honestly. If it was me I would just go with the 6870.
1 card is much more easier to run. Your system will run much cooler and much quieter to.
