What does the 3800+ mean on my AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core CPU?
I recently upgraded my CPU from an AMD Sempron 3200+ 1.8 GHz to an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.0 GHz. Trying to figure out what those 4 digit #'s indicate.
It's a model number.
AMD originally intended the ####+ model numbers to show the equivalent Pentium 4 processor speed the AMD processor would perform as. I.e. the Sempron 3200+ would perform as well as a Celeron 3.2 GHz cpu, your X2 3800+ will match a pair of 3.8 GHz Pentium 4's.
AMD did this because their processors ran at lower clock speeds, but performed better than an equivalent clocked Pentium 4. It really was just a marketing strategy, not a rigorous benchmark comparison.

Nvidia fights back against AMD with fresh GPUs
THE INQUIRER Analysis AMD'S GPU DIVISION , that is, ATI, led the performance race against Nvidia for most of 2009 and at least the first half of 2010. If you count the dual GPU cards as one unit, it still leads now with the year-old HD5970 and is expected to continue to do so with the upcoming HD6990 next month.
