May someone please explain what IDE and ATA is?
I am really confused because i'm reading on a site that IDE is the same as ATA, but then it says ATA is a different thing and there's SATA and i just don't get it!
ATA is an interface standard for the connection of storage devices such as hard disks, solid-state drives, floppy drives, and CD-ROM drives in computers.

Serial ATA is a computer interface too, for devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. Serial ATA was designed to replace the older ATA (AT Attachment) standard (also known as IDE).

IDE and ATA are interchangeable terms now a days. However, we typically say ide cable not ata cable. When referring to the type or standard and not the cable its self we say ata not ide. Nevertheless, they are interchangeable terms as they both refer to the same thing .. just different aspects of the same thing.
note: Sata and Ide are not interchangeable terms as Sata and Ide cables are different. (see the pictures). Sata is serial not parallel like ide cables. Sata and Ide/ata operate at different speeds too. Sata is faster; So its not only a different cable, but a faster connection.
